Transportation

Plane, train, bus, and automobile are the primary means of transportation.

If you rent a car, be advised that:

  • an American driver’s licence is valid in Canada.

  • if you decide to visit Canada from a country other than the United States, you must request an international driver’s permit, available through the Automobile Association of your country of origin. This will allow you to drive and/or rent a car in Canada.

  • Canadians drive on the right-hand side of the road.

  • speed limits are posted in the metric system (and are usually limited to 100 kilometres per hour on highways, and between 30 and 50 kilometres per hour in towns and municipalities).

  • right-hand turns at red lights are permitted, although this rule does NOT apply everywhere Quebec, particularly on the Island of Montreal, where right turns on a red light are prohibited. Eighty per cent of the time in Trois Rivières, right-hand turns on a red light are permitted except at intersections where a sign explicitly forbids it.
