Dialogue on Canadian Diversity II
second-language Poetry Contest


Canadian secondary school students are invited to take part in a poetry contest based on the theme “Dialogue on Canadian Diversity”. Participants are called upon to use their second language to create a work inspired by the richness of Canada’s geological, biological and/or cultural heritage. With the collaboration of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the “Dialogue on Canadian Diversity” poetry contest will allow thousands of young people to express themselves on about the following three themes:

  1. Geosphere : soil, water, and air in Canada, including climate.
  2. Biosphere : Canada’s living nature, i.e. its micro-organisms, plants, animals and humans.
  3. Ethnosphere : Canadians and their culture. Their relationship with nature and with other people.

Competition Rules : Students are invited to present five poems, or a five-page poem on a theme about Canada. Poems must be written in the participants’ second official language. Poems must be typed or neatly handwritten on 8.5” X 11” paper, double-spaced. Electronic submissions are encouraged.

Prizes : The two poetry contest winners will take part in one of the most significant literary events in Canada: the 23 th Festival International de la Poésie held in Trois-Rivières (Québec). School events may also be organized in which contest winners may read their work.

Selection committee : One representative from the Festival International de la Poésie and 2 Canadian poets will compose the Selection Committee. Winners will be announced at the official opening of the Festival International de la Poésie (FIP), September 28, 2007.

Deadline : The deadline for receiving poems at the Festival International de la Poésie is June 1, 2007, as indicated by the postmark or the e-mail delivery date. Winners will be notified in the following weeks. The contest winners will give their poems at the Festival International de la Poésie, October 6, 2007 –travel, hotel, meal, etc. paid by FIP.
